Post-Christmas sales lure holiday shoppers hoping for bargains

KIRKWOOD, MO (KTVI)-Shopping malls, stores, and specialty shops across the area were packed once again, Friday, with shoppers taking advantage of huge day after Christmas sales.

Smaller boutiques like Christopher’s in Kirkwood have traditionally put holiday merchandise on sale immediately after Christmas to make room for new merchandise. But larger chains have followed suit in recent years, creating a shopper’s delight.

“This is the day for bargain hunters,” Christopher’s owner Chris Thau said. “It’s a day that a lot of people we don’t normally see in the store come into the store and snap up the holiday merchandise at 50% off.”

At the West County Center, parking spaces were scarce and crowds inside were large, though shoppers said they were pleasantly surprised things were a little less crowded than the days leading up to Christmas. Most stores had some kind of sale sign in the window, with deals being offered as much as 70% off.   You just have to know where to look according to the savvy.

“It depends,” Allison McMullen said. “Some place have really little sales. Some places, like we went to one store and it was 60% off of everything.”

At the Target store in Kirkwood, the parking lot was also packed. So was the customer service area, where folks were exchanging those gifts that, either literally or figuratively, didn’t fit.

“We’ve got folks coming and doing a lot of exchanges, maybe getting different sizes or different gifts,” Manager David Overton said.

He also noted how important a day the day after Christmas has become for retailers.

“Today’s been an amazing day for us. We’ve got some amazing things on clearance. We’ve got holiday clearance. We’ve got men’s and women’s, children’s clothes on clearance, and people are coming in and grabbing up all the great sales.”

Merchants are hoping a strong 2014 holiday season is proof that the great recession of a few years back is finally in the history books for good.

“2008 was the one really bad year,” Thau said. “Ever since then we were recovering somewhat. This year was a really good year for us.”

And there’s one more nugget of good news for retailers: a three day weekend backed up to Christmas which they hope will provide a little extra shopping time.
